PPD is a popular packaging format for drivers that accept Postscript data or PDF data as input. Due to dominance of select operating systems, the operating system–driver interface is more standardized than driver–printer interfaces. Hence there is more standardization in packaging formats of drivers than the actual functions performed by drivers. These drivers can convert print data from one general purpose format (e.g. PDF, DVI etc) to another general purpose format (e.g. PS). Through the use of the Printer Preferences program printers could be connected to the serial port as well.

I think the cost advantages of not including a Postscript rasteriser are the reason that the PC way won the market, especially as computer power has increased. Apple’s new patent looks like a step back from the air print stuff in iOS, which appears to vest a lot of logic back into the printer. I have a big, fat HP lj3100 printer, and it will not print with any driver on WinXp, ~Vista or ~7. All that extra space is help files, this source graphics, updater, a silly application to let you order more ink online, clipart, etc.
